Microsoft, in partnership with Asus, unveiled two new handheld gaming PCs—ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X—during the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday. These marks Microsoft’s inaugural Xbox-branded portable consoles designed to deliver on-the-go gaming through distinct hardware configurations.
The ROG Xbox Ally model is powered by the AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, targeting casual players, while the ROG Xbox Ally X incorporates the higher-end AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chipset for users seeking enhanced performance.
Both devices feature a 7-inch full HD LCD screen with a 120Hz refresh rate. Asus has equipped the displays with FreeSync Premium to prevent screen tearing, complemented by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and an anti-reflective DXC coating. The handhelds’ grips take design cues from the Xbox Wireless Controller to better fit a variety of hand sizes.
The standard ROG Xbox Ally is fitted with 16GB LPDDR5x RAM and a 512GB SSD, whereas the Ally X ups the specification to 24GB LPDDR5x RAM and doubles storage capacity. The button layouts are largely consistent, but the Ally X includes enhanced impulse triggers, while the base Ally uses hall effect triggers. Both models incorporate a dedicated Xbox button for swift access to the Game Bar interface, facilitating chats, app navigation, and settings.
Windows 11 has been optimized for these handhelds by limiting background processes and deferring non-essential tasks to allocate more system resources toward gaming performance. A revamped Game Bar integrates Asus’s Armoury Crate, enabling users to customize input and device settings, launch games, manage their library, and connect with friends. The gaming ecosystem supports titles from Xbox, Game Pass, Battle.net, and other digital storefronts.
Microsoft is collaborating with Roblox to ensure seamless native support on both devices and is expanding its developer program to highlight games optimized for handheld play. The AI-powered Gaming Copilot, accessible through the Game Bar, offers personalized tips to accelerate game launches, boost player skills, and foster community engagement.
Battery capacity varies between models: the ROG Xbox Ally carries a 60Wh battery, while the Ally X comes with an 80Wh battery. Both support charging via a 67W charging stand.
The handhelds are scheduled for release this holiday season across 24 markets including Australia, France, Japan, Singapore, the UK, and the United States. Availability in other regions, such as India, will follow. Microsoft is expected to disclose pricing, pre-order details, and compatible accessories in the near future.
